Schiava (Vernatsch)

Schiava produces relatively pale, lightly scented wines once highly regarded in Alto Adige but today, with changing tastes, giving ground to the more powerful Lagrein. In fact Lagrein is often added to boost the intensity, colour and structure of Schiava. While Schiava perhaps does not have the potential for greatness, it does consistently produce charming, fresh and eminently drinkable light reds. St Magdalener (Santa Maddalena) is a DOC encircling the city of Bolzano and the best territory for Schiava.
