Kerner

Kerner

Kerner is a relatively modern variety, a union of Riesling and Schiava, developed in the late 1920s in Germany, though only approved for cultivation in 1969. Like most new varieties, Kerner was developed to address perceived reliability shortfalls in more noble grapes like Riesling, in this case offering earlier ripening and frost resistance. Happily Kerner retains much of Riesling’s characteristics as well as benefitting from a sunny and complex array of aromatics, from citrus to mango with floral and spicy nuances intermixed. Though planted throughout Germany, it is in Alto Adige’s Isarco valley that Kerner reaches its apotheosis.
