Dwarfed in area and production output by the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC, the Verdicchio di Matelica DOC covers a small, elevated region in south-central Marche flanked by the Apennines. The local climate coupled with the chalky limestone-rich soils invests the wines with finesse, vibrant acidity and extract.

Although historically regarded as the source of the finest Verdicchio, the producers of Matelica have mostly fallen short of this reputation – the familiar pressure of economics, and perhaps a lack of ambition, hobbling improvement. Armed with the belief that Verdicchio is a noble grape and that it has a perfect home in Matelica, Fabio Marchionni has led a quiet revolution with quality and authenticity as his weapons

Aside from producing a tiny amount of rosato, Fabio is singular in his pursuit of crafting the finest Verdicchio, and as a consequence produces just one cuvée from his organically farmed 3.5ha estate. Recognising the primacy of vineyard health in making great wine, Fabio and his father converted the family estate to organics in 1995. Fabio’s wines are all about crystalline purity and invigorating acidity – modern benchmark Verdicchio.
