Boca

The Barbaglia Winery is located in the province of Novara, at the foot of Monte Rosa, in the tiny DOC of Boca. Here, in Piedmont’s cooler viticultural reaches, Nebbiolo is known as Spanna, and though the Boca DOC has existed since 1969, most production has been for local or own consumption, with there still only being 17 hectares of official vineyards. The broader DOC of Colline Novaresi accounts for the more substantial, though still decidedly compact, holdings of 215 hectares.

Silvia Barbaglia takes the lead at the winery, with her pioneering winemaker father, Sergio, still helping her in the vineyard and cantina. Under her leadership, the estate has become a leading light of Alto Piemonte, and she has both acquired old vineyards and planted new ones, with the estate now accounting for a little over 4 hectares of vines. 

In the winery, the approach is an admixture of modern winemaking and traditional values, with temperature controlled stainless steel used for fermentation and some maturation, while traditional large casks are used to mature most of the reds. Barbaglia produces a Boca DOC wine, with Nebbiolo blended with Vespolina, while she also makes a varietal range of Nebbiolo, Vespolina, Uva Rara and Croatina; the estate is also well known for a range of sparkling wines.
