Arneis
Another of Italy’s brink of extinction grapes, Arneis, though probably never widely planted, fell into disfavour for its fickle nature. For the average farmer Arneis vines are not blessed with large enough crops and rapid acid loss is common close to harvestable sugar levels. The traditional home of Arneis is in Piedmont’s Roero, though the Italian resurgence of interest in the 1990s has seen plantings in the USA, Australia and New Zealand. Good examples show bright aromas of apple, peach and apricot, textural mid palates and bright acidity.
