Nero d’Avola

Nero d’Avola is the standard bearer for Sicilian red (black) varieties, it is both complete enough for varietal bottlings, but also characterful enough to add significant input to blends. It is a late ripening variety that holds acid well, perhaps ill suited to elevated sites and the mainland, but makes it ideal for the sometimes punishing sun of the extreme south. The flavour spectrum is typically in the dark berry spectrum, though expressions tend to also clearly reveal the savoury, earthy character of the territory in which they are grown.
