Negroamaro
Negroamaro has been the dominant red, or rather black, grape in Puglia for some time, though Primitivo now sits right alongside it in terms of plantings. The wines are typically dense and darkly fruited and characterized by a mild bitter note on the finish. With less rigorous viticulture and winemaking the wines can tend to the gruff and rustic, though old-vine expressions from traditional albarello training systems and more sensitive making can produce wines of profound intensity and character.
