Bricco Appiani

To call Flavio Roddolo a legend of Piedmont is somewhat of an understatement. Indeed, at times the man seems more myth than substance, with an ardent following of wine obsessed locals affectionately, though not formerly, known as Roddolistas. The man is real, though, and so is the wine, but with well under 2,000 cases made it is in perennially short supply. Situated on the Bricco Appiani hill on the border of Monforte and Dogliani on a six-hectare estate, Flavio makes a little Dolcetto and Barbera and even less Nebbiolo (both Nebbiolo d’Alba and Barolo Ravera).

Flavio is famously taciturn, forbidding according to some, a man who would rather listen to his vines and let his wines do the talking – to which we are always happy to listen. He manages his estate according to biodynamic principles and hasn’t used a chemical treatment in his 40 years at the helm. The wines are made solely by Flavio in his small cantina – all indigenous yeasts, no new oak, no fining and no filtration – and matured in his underground cellar. The wines are, to speak broadly, expressions of territory as much as grape, etched with minerality and detail, coiled, pensive even, wines that evolve slowly but magnificently in the glass and cellar.
