Lagrein

Lagrein

Though once considered inferior to Schiava and often made into rosé and simple red table wine, Lagrein is increasing in plantings and asserting itself as Alto Adige’s most significant red variety. Lagrein is often darkly fruited with notes of red and black cherries, with moderate tannins and a distinct acid drive. Lagrein is one of the few indigenous varieties that can display almost new world fruit intensity. Indeed the perceived superiority of Schiava had more to do with its reliable production at high volume, than for any quality deficit on the part of Lagrein.
