Albana

Albana

Albana has a long and well-documented history, with favourable references dating back several hundred years, and although it is predominantly grown in Emilia-Romagna, it shares a relationship (parent or offspring) with Garganega, and therefore connections to the many other grapes that are genetically connected to the principal Soave variety.

Although it is hardly the most famous of denominations, Romagna Albana received its DOC in 1967, a year after the classifications began, and was elevated to DOCG status in 1987. This gave Albana the distinction of being responsible for Italy's first white DOCG, which unsurprisingly created more than a little controversy. Fifty years later, Albana is perhaps no more famous than it was back then, but in the right hands it makes white of good character and vibrant freshness, and can also comfortably straddle styles from sparkling to passito.
