Frappato
Although Frappato also crops up in Puglia, 85% of the plantings are to be found in Sicily, where it joins Nero d’Avola and Nerello Mascalese as the most emblematic of the island’s red grapes. However, unlike the other standard bearers, Frappato diverts from their black-fruited earthiness, playing in a vibrant, cherry-scented key. It does find solo opportunities in the blanket Sicilia DOC, as well as Eloro DOC, Vittoria DOC and a handful of IGPs, but it is in Sicily’s only DOCG, Cerasuolo di Vittoria, that it features most famously, and as a minority player in a mandatory blend with Nero d’Avola. However, its contribution to the finished wines, which varies depending on producer (30-50%), is always dramatic, adding freshness, fragrance and detail to the darkly wound core of Nero d’Avola.
