Paolo and Lorenzo Marchionni took to the land, to growing grapes, when they were just young men, founding their estate in 1993 when they were 20 and 16 respectively. But they were not born of the land, if you will, but rather were drawn to it. In fact, their parents were medical professionals. It was with the help of a fading generation of farmers that the Marchionnis first learnt their craft in ad hoc apprenticeships with traditional growers in Chianti Colli Fiorentini.

Paolo and Lorenzo have, over many years, worked closely with fabled consultant Andrea Paoletti. Now, this is not another story of one of Italy’s legendary consultants imprinting themselves on an estate, but rather of a relationship that has focused on a lightness, a deftness of touch both in the vineyards (planted, replanted or restructured in 1993, 1998, 2002) and the winery. Indeed, it is this transparency to territorial expression, to varietal expression, to the passage of the vintage that both defines the estate and establishes the stewardship of the brothers as an extraordinary one.

The brothers embarked on a journey when Italian wine was climbing into the peak of its ‘international’ obsession, where the most heralded of Tuscan wines were cloaked in oak and driven by ripeness, alcohol and extraction. Many a young maker was swept up in this, but not the brothers Marchionni. In fact, they have always navigated a path that has become recognised as the best practice approach to produce wines of identity, character and authenticity. Today, much has been learnt, and much has been refined, but the philosophy of growing fruit as naturally as possible (certified organic) and then making it in a transparent way to reflect site, grape and season has not. These are genuinely exciting wines handcrafted in miniscule quantities.
