Picolit

Picolit

Picolit is a significant Friulian grape, in terms of regional identity at least, its tiny acreage suggesting that it more properly belongs on the endangered list. Picolit reaches its heights in the Colli Orientali del Friuli Picolit DOCG, in the form of dessert wines, typically, but not exclusively in a passito (dried on the vine or on straw mats to concentrate flavour, sugar and acidity) style. These wines are some of Italy’s most historically important, vying even with the great wines of Sauternes.

Picolit’s natural vigour, long ripening cycle and low yields were never going to be great attributes in encouraging its replanting after the devastation of phylloxera, however it has been on the steady increase both for traditional dessert styles as well as a component of the great modern Friulian white blends.
