Fiano

Fiano

Another low-yielding white grape pushed to the brink of oblivion before being rescued. In Italy, when the imperatives of quality and finesse supplanted those of production reliability and volume, grapes like Fiano started to re-emerge. Famously from the volcanic soils of Avellino in Campania, Fiano is now being planted throughout the south with notable examples coming from Sicily and Puglia. Retaining acidity well, Fiano is capable of producing quite full-bodied and densely flavoured white wines, though the finest wines from Avellino have a restraint and mineral tinged tension that defines them.
