Friulano - Ancient & Compelling
Friuli Venezia Giulia is home to some of our favourite producers and winemaking traditions. This is the spiritual home of skin contact wines - sometime's called "orange" wines. Winemakers here have mastered the ancient techniques of leaving white wines on skins to produce complex and textural whites. Many of these wines are fermented in amphorae or neutral vessels with a spectrum of flavours from dried apricot, citrus and exotic spice to earthy, nutty characters and often a golden or amber colour.
The Primosic family have farmed the classic grapes of the Collio for generations. The wine are expressions of the Collio, reflective of the Ponca soil, the cooling impact of the Bora (local wind) and centuries of tradition. They grow native varieties Ribolla Gialla, Friulano, Malvasia Istriana and International grapes such as Chardonnay and make a range of styles from fresh and vibrant to textural, skin contact orange styles. Well made, clean and delicious, these wines are amongst the most compelling wines we sell.
Ponca soil, a mix of marl and sandstone from ancient seabeds, defines Friuli Venezia Giulia's wines. The vines work harder here, digging deep into this poor yet mineral-rich soil, resulting in lower yields, more concentration and structure
