The Collio is home to some of Friuli’s, some of Italy’s, finest viticultural land, and the commune of San Floriano del Collio on the Slovenian border is home to some of the Collio’s most prized sites. Benefitting from the classic Ponca soil, the cooling Bora that whips along the Vipacco Valley from the East, and the moderating breezes gusting up from the Adriatic, the 9.5 hectares of hillside vineyards of the Terčič winery could not be any more ideally situated.

San Floriano del Collio

The Collio is home to some of Friuli’s, some of Italy’s, finest viticultural land, and the commune of San Floriano del Collio on the Slovenian border is home to some of the Collio’s most prized sites. Benefitting from the classic Ponca soil, the cooling Bora that whips along the Vipacco Valley from the East, and the moderating breezes gusting up from the Adriatic, the 9.5 hectares of hillside vineyards of the Terčič winery could not be any more ideally situated.

Matijaž Terčič’s family have farmed these hillsides for generations, with his grandfather Alojz the first to focus intently on viticulture. Matijaž’s father, Zdenko, enhanced the winery, but it was Matijaž that refined the endeavour into a complete operation, from growing the grapes to producing estate wine for commercial sale, starting with the 1994 vintage. Since then, Terčič has grown significantly in reputation but remained distinctly compact in size and handcrafted in nature.

Terčič, as with many Friulian producers, is a white wine specialist, producing wines from a classic blend of the autochthonous and the historically entrenched ‘French’ varieties.
