Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is one of the world’s great grapes, utterly distinctive, terroir expressive and capable of significant longevity. Responsible for the great wines of Barolo and Barbaresco, Nebbiolo also reaches extremely high quality levels in Lombardy’s Valtellina where it is known as Chiavennasca (pictured). Nebbiolo, much like Pinot Noir, requires a masterly hand both in the vineyard and the winery, perhaps accounting for the fact that it has not being widely planted internationally. Weak in anthocyanin (colouring matter) but high in tannin, acid and with high potential alcohols, Nebbiolo is an unusual grape that produces intensely savoury but fragrant wines with strong site reflections and powerful structures.
