Quite different to the Tuscany that most tourists see – more wild west than medieval fiefdom – the Maremma has long been cattle country and until the first half of the 20th century much of it was a vast malarial swamp. Possibly the only tick in Mussolini’s ‘pro column' was to drain the swamp, which revealed the coastal terrain to be the fertile and spectacular land that we see today. 

Riccardo Lepri’s vineyards are situated 10km inland at an elevation of 200m and benefit from the coastal climate, but also maintain a good distinction between night and daytime temperatures.
