Glera (Prosecco)

Glera (Prosecco)

To protect the new DOCG of Prosecco Conegliano e Valdobbiadene from pretenders carrying the grape name Prosecco, and therefore the appellation, a name change was required. Prosecco has been widely bastardised with large amounts of ‘Prosecco’ being made outside the traditional zone and indeed outside of Italy - anyone for a can of Paris Hilton Prosecco? Now Prosecco describes the wine, Glera the variety. Whatever the name or origin, it is a variety suited to sparkling wine as it produces fresh flavours at relatively low sugar and maintains bright acidity. Glera produces typically fragrant wines with light floral and apple notes.
