Dolcetto

Dolcetto

Dolcetto is generally the most approachable and understandable of Piedmont’s holy trinity of red grapes – it also features in neighbouring Liguria under the synonym Ormeasco. Apart from some exceptions, notably the wines from Dogliani, Dolcetto is best consumed in its youth. It is typically purple-tinged with bright floral notes and primary fruit (black cherry, plums and blackberries) and usually medium-bodied with typically low acid but potentially high tannins. When grown in a superior, mineral-rich site, Dolcetto can age well and convey terroir admirably, but still, fragrant, uncomplicated young Dolcetto is one of wine’s great pleasures.
